When Your Student Needs More Than a School-Based Evaluation Can Provide

Independent Neuropsychological Evaluations for School Psychologists & Learning Specialists in New York City

You know your students. You see them every day, you review their work, and you sit in their IEP meetings. When something isn't adding up — when the school evaluation didn't capture the full picture, when a student's needs exceed what your resources can assess, or when a family needs an independent outside opinion — we're the practice you can trust to do the work thoroughly and send your student back to you better understood.

Dr. KC Bugg & Associates works closely with school-based professionals throughout New York City to provide comprehensive independent evaluations that complement and extend what school teams can do.

What We Bring To Your Students

What We Offer School Psychologists & Learning Specialists

Comprehensive Independent Evaluations Our evaluations examine cognitive ability, academic achievement, attention and executive functioning, language processing, memory, processing speed, and social-emotional development — in far more depth than a school-based evaluation typically can. When a student's needs are complex, our reports provide the detailed profile that drives meaningful programming decisions.

An Outside Perspective When Families Need One Sometimes families want an independent evaluation — either because they disagree with school findings, because they want a second opinion before an IEP meeting, or simply because they want an objective outside view. We provide comprehensive, impartial assessments with no institutional conflicts of interest. Our only obligation is to the student.

Twice-Exceptional Evaluations Twice-exceptional learners are among the most difficult students to evaluate and serve well within a school setting — and among our areas of deepest expertise. When a gifted student is struggling in ways that don't make sense, or when a student with learning differences is being underserved because their strengths mask their challenges, we provide a full-profile evaluation that finally makes the picture clear.

Support for Complex and Multi-Diagnosis Profiles Students with multiple co-occurring diagnoses — ADHD and autism, dyslexia and anxiety, intellectual disability and emotional dysregulation — require evaluations that can hold the full complexity of their profile. Our clinicians have the breadth and experience to evaluate these students comprehensively and produce reports that give school teams something concrete to work with.

IEE Evaluations for Families Disagreeing with District Findings When a family disagrees with your district's evaluation, they have the right to request an Independent Educational Evaluation at public expense. We are an approved IEE provider for the NYC Department of Education. If a family in your school is pursuing an IEE, we are a qualified, experienced option — and our reports are written to hold up in IEP meetings and due process proceedings.

Direct Communication with School Teams With the family's written authorization, we communicate directly with school-based teams about our findings. If you have specific questions you'd like our evaluation to address, tell us upfront — we will structure the assessment with your clinical questions in mind and make sure our recommendations are directly actionable for your team.

Working Together

How to Refer a Student

Direct the family to contact us by phone or email to schedule a free consultation. If you'd like to share context about the student before intake — which we strongly encourage — reach out to us directly. The more we understand about the school team's questions going in, the more useful the evaluation will be.

A referral form is available on our [For Professionals overview page] if useful for your records.

Collaboration

How We Work With School-Based Professionals

We approach referrals from school psychologists and learning specialists as professional collaborations. You know things about your students that don't appear in any file — patterns of behavior across settings, how they respond under different kinds of pressure, what their teachers observe day to day. That context makes our evaluations more accurate and more useful.

With family authorization, we welcome direct communication with school-based teams before the evaluation begins. Tell us what you're seeing, what questions you need answered, and what the school team needs from the report. We will design the evaluation battery and structure the report with your needs in mind.

After the evaluation, we are equally available to discuss findings with school teams directly — to help translate results into programming decisions, accommodation plans, and IEP goals that actually reflect the student's profile.

Adult ADHD & Neuropsychological Testing

Many adults discover in their 20s, 30s, or beyond that they're neurodivergent—ADHD, autistic, or have learning differences that explain lifelong experiences of thinking and processing differently. Our evaluations provide diagnostic clarity and access to accommodations that honor how your brain works.

We offer two types of adult ADHD evaluations:
Comprehensive Neuropsychological Evaluation (8 hours)

Full assessment for workplace accommodations, professional exam documentation, or comprehensive diagnostic clarity. Includes complete cognitive and achievement testing, attention and executive function measures, and detailed written report.

Abbreviated ADHD Testing (2 hours)

Focused evaluation for treatment planning and medication management. Includes clinical interview, ADHD rating scales, and diagnostic report with treatment recommendations. Not appropriate for accommodation requests.

Which evaluation is right for you?

We'll help you determine this during your free consultation.

We also evaluate adults for:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis

Workplace accommodations (ADA)

Executive functioning differences

Learning differences affecting work or graduate school

Memory and cognitive concerns

Diagnostic clarity for treatment planning

Common reasons adults seek evaluation:

💭 "I've always struggled with organization and focus, but thought everyone did."
💭 "I'm successful, but everything takes me twice as long as it should."

💭 "My child was just diagnosed with ADHD, and I see myself in the symptoms."

💭 "I've always felt different socially, and recently learned about autism in adults."

What Sets Us Apart

Why School Psychologists & Learning Specialists Refer to Us

We understand the school context. Our clinicians understand how schools work, what IEP teams need, how 504 plans function, and what documentation is required to support programming decisions in NYC public and private schools. You won't need to explain the context — we already know it.

We are an approved IEE provider. For families pursuing IEEs through the NYC DOE, our evaluations are formally recognized and carry full weight in IEP meetings and due process proceedings.

We communicate with you. With family authorization, we engage directly with school teams — before and after the evaluation. We are a genuine collaborative partner, not a black box.

We cover the full diagnostic range. ADHD, autism, learning disabilities, twice-exceptional profiles, intellectual disabilities, developmental delays, emotional and behavioral concerns — our team has the breadth to handle whatever your students bring.

We write reports that school teams can use. Our reports are thorough, clearly organized, and written with actionable recommendations that translate directly into IEP goals, 504 accommodations, and programming decisions.

We have two NYC locations. Flatiron District and Astoria, Queens — accessible to families across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and beyond.
